My play ENTITLEMENT premieres at the Summerworks Theatre Festival in Toronto, this August. I'm thrilled as it is the first stage play I've written. Upon finishing the second draft, I sent it to an old friend and colleague, acclaimed actor and stage director David Ferry. He enthusiastically organized a reading of the script in January and the success of that reading gave me the confidence to apply to Summerworks for a spot among the 36 out of 200 applicants in their festival.
The play is a satire about an out of work screenwriter who takes a job teaching scriptwriting at a film school. An ambitious student challenges his methods and the screenwriter must fight for his job culminating in a confrontation over art and commerce in a world that is no longer a meritocracy, if it ever was. It's a show about the transformation of education into edutainment and about the rising power of an entitled generation--but at what cost?
The play was accepted by Summerworks and after finding an amazing cast, David starts rehearsals June 1. I've made some small cuts and dramaturgical revisions to make sure the piece comes in under the 90 minute limit required by the festival.
